The Simbolism of Temptation

Power can corrupt or create which is the role that it plays in The

Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien. The ring is the epitome of power

and is the heart of this novel. Many creatures are faced with the temptation

of the ring in which most fail to deny. An evil lord created the rings in which

one is made to control the rest. When the ring was taken from him the

power was then floating among the world waiting to corrupt another should

and test all of the limits of ones character.

Frodo is a main character in the novel and is one of many few who

deny the temptation of all of the rings powers. It has the ability to make one

invisible, extend the time of life, and if evil or darkness exists in the one who

wears it, it is magnified and eventually consumes that person. The greed is

so bold that it is almost impossible to resist. The one who controls the ring

well essentially control most of everything if the ring does not destroy them

first. The ring symbolizes the temptation and choices that one is faced in life.

It also reveals all the creatures true characteristics.

Smeagol is one who took to the temptation of the ring and killed is

friend Deagol for it. The ring essentially took over his life and turned him into

a hunch back repulsive creature who was once a hobbit. When he loses the

ring he is still extremely greedy and will do any thing to get it back. Others

like Frodo and Gandolf refused the greed and temptation of the ring and

wanted what was best for the kingdom and for it to be relieved from evil. All

the ring was known for doing was causing corruption to ones soul and pain

The ring represents more than just power but the temptation of

power. Those who denied its temptation are forever respected and will be

known as the heroes because they turned away from the evils for the better

of the kingdom. There are two sides to power that is usually balanced

however the ring only has one intention which is to control and to condemn. It

is the deniability of evil that turns into a greater power than one knows. The

relms went into balance when the rings were taken care of and those who

could not handle the temptation did not survive however the ones who did

will forever be remembered.

Since of Power

Power plays a huge role in The Fellowship of the Ring

and shows how it can be used and abused in so many ways. It is in question

whether not power changes ones character or reveals it. In the novel it

shows how tempting power can be and what it can do to people and

relationships and in this case kingdoms. I see the abuse of power everyday

in this society. People abuse it in schools, law firms, and the government.

Basically all positions of power can be abused that is why character is a key

part when you are appointing someone in a power of position. If power wasn't

abused so much in the society than life would seem to be so much easier.

Man vs. Self

Frodo is the protagonist in The Fellowship of the Ring while the ring is the antagonist always fighting against him and doing everything it can do to stop him from succeeding. It is a man vs. self as the battle to do the right things continues to rage on.

Addiction

'I do really wish to destroy it!' cried Frodo. 'Or, well, to have it destroyed. I am not made for perilous quests. I wish I had never seen the Ring! Why did it come to me? Why was I chosen?'[p.61]

The  Ring is symbolically an addiction through out the book! Frodo tries to fight the 'addiction' and destroy it.  Gandalf tries his hardest to guide Frodo through his journey. Frodo feels as though he is no strong enough to stop this addiction, yet all the pressure on him is a sign that he is strong enough and can be triumphant. This Ring is an addiction and obsession to all those who in counter it.

Publication Blurb

This novel was first published in 1954 by Allen and

Olken. It was the publishers decision to bread up this long series into three

books. Tolkiens origanal wish was to put all of the works into one novel

combined with the Silmallion. With the publishers knowing that a novel this

big simply wouldn't take they ultimately decided to devide it up.

Ashes and Fire

"From the ashes a fire shall be woken,  light from the

shadows shall spring;Renewed shall be blade that was broken,The

crownless again shall be king.” This quote is one of the many iconic

elements in the novel. It shows Tolkiens intrest in poetry as well as sets the

tone for the novel. It also shows the tone of remaking or the act of making

new that will take place throughout the Fellowship of the Ring. This quote is

also very uplifting and brings a since of hope that anything can be made

new and speaking it out loud just makes one have more belief in what they

are saying. This shows the attitude that is held in the novel and holds the

backbone for certain characters.
